Code
On looking at Veerle’s code, I thought it was super interesting how she used comments within the code! Beyond having class names being understandable, she goes a step further and adds comments in to help understand the organization of her code. As someone learning, this is super helpful! And I can imagine that when looking at her website, if changes need to be made, she can more easily find where she needs to go. It was also easier to inspect as I did not always need to open up each section to understand what would be in it.
UI
I appreciated how she used text and color throughout her website. On her home page, she uses capital letters to draw attention to the different pages and/or topics she discusses on her website, and then she also uses the color to design that particular page. For example, her webpage and posts that are about design utilize the color purple. She even color codes the titles of her posts, minus the capitalization for the post titles. On her home page, she also has a recommended reading section that has numbers that also match the color of whatever topic the post is about. Although Veerle has a lot of posts, the color schemes help to narrow in on what the user may want to read about most.
UX
I absolutely loved how Veerle used color, but in general I found Veerle’s website quite busy and a bit overwhelming. In general, it seemed like a theme she was going for. The different use of colors, fonts, and pictures were a bit intense, but the colors did help me navigate the different sections of her website and different font styles would draw attention to certain points in her posts. Some of the color choices were distracting and painful for me, like the yellow on white background, so it did not help me feel like I wanted to spend a lot of time on those particular pages. Some individuals may not mind this, but I would have appreciated a bit more of a dark and light contrast with less stressful reading. But I love how down to earth the language is in her writing. It helps me feel like I am connected to a person who is doing this work.
Summary
Veerle’s website is very well color coordinated and coded. The website is quite busy but overall, the color coding helps with some of the organization of the website. It does give a certain life to her website and since it is her own personal website, showcases a bit of her personality. Having the search feature in the upper corner, and the arrow to return to the top in the lower corner also helped with navigating the information on the website. She truly takes sharing and learning down to the level of even coding her website.
